While practicing for their Christmas program, the boys sang the line, “Happy birthday, Jesus. I’m so glad it’s Christmas.” Our youngest stopped, looked up at me and asked, “Mom, why am I glad it’s Christmas if it’s not my birthday?” What a huge responsibility we have as parents to teach them the reason for the season! It’s tough for their little minds to understand right now, but instilling in them early on that God gives us the best gift of all is so important!

As a family, we’ve started traditions like “Operation Christmas Child,” an advent calendar, the “Four Gift Rule”, and reading the Christmas story on Christmas morning. We hope to just keep building, year after year, traditions of giving and serving to teach the ultimate lesson: Jesus is the reason we’re glad it’s Christmas. Not the gifts, shopping, time off of work and school, good food, decorations, or anything else standing in the way.

“Happy birthday to you, Jesus! We love and celebrate you now and always. We are so very glad it’s Christmas!”
