I Can’t Afford to Tithe
“I can’t afford to tithe.” This was my response to my neighbor—we walked together every day and I was concerned, as usual, about my finances. She told me that if I didn’t tithe, the Lord couldn’t bless me. But I was a single Mom with nine children, a part-time job, and only welfare income after my husband moved out. So, really, how could I tithe?
But I knew deep in my heart she was right, so I decided to trust God and try it. I began by giving 10% of my income after taxes; then I “graduated” to tithing the full amount of my income. I now give the 10% tithe to the church budget; missions, community funding, and special offerings are extra giving. The Lord has blessed me, so that now I am able to support a widow in Burundi and also two children through the International Child Care Ministry as well as donate to other ministries.
I am thankful that the Lord has supplied my needs, and so thankful to this neighbor who was not afraid to tell me what she felt was the right thing to do—so I am passing that on!
