Just a Row of Backpacks

Cherubs Preschool

This picture, snapped by Cary Brant on her way through the preschool on the first week of classes this fall, caught my eye. Truth is, I can’t quit looking at it. Simply a row of backpacks, but it represents so much more! Each one of those backpacks belongs to a little person whose life and family are being impacted in countless ways by Spring Arbor Cherubs Preschool.

Fun facts about Cherubs: the preschool started 48 years ago by some church members with a vision for a lab school for Spring Arbor College. Today we are a ministry of this church and serve more than 100 families each year. We help get their three, four and five-year-olds ready for elementary school. But that’s just a small piece of what we are.

We are a resource for families who are just starting to learn the skills of parenting. We are a haven for students whose home lives are difficult – a constant for young ones whose parents are splitting up or can’t afford food for the table. Our teachers have helped connect families with housing and cars. More than once, a staff member has heard of a need and the next day our office is full of baskets of food and necessities donated by our staff for a family in crisis.

We are a bridge for families from our church community to reach out to other families. Eighty percent of our student population comes from outside our church body. We purposely provide opportunities for the families of our students to interact with each other, forming bonds that last all the way through high school.

We are a light in the local educational community. Our reputation for excellence in preparing students brings many families to our doors who would not come to a church on Sunday.  Our students learn their pre-reading skills, but also Bible songs and verses that will stay with them for a lifetime.

We are a doorway to a life of faith for young couples who realize that they are looking for a compass to help them as they raise their families, and it draws them to search out a spiritual home. The preschool then becomes the path to seek out spiritual help and guidance, and they end up a part of our greater church on Sunday mornings and all week long.

So the next time you see a child’s backpack, please say a prayer for Spring Arbor Cherubs Preschool, our students and the amazing people who make it happen.
It’s a row of backpacks – full of potential and promise.
