Give Us This Day Our Daily Bread
Only after we have focused on God, and His reign in our lives, we are able to turn to our own daily needs. The prayer is in the first person plural—we ask for our own needs, but also for us all. The prayer teaches us to ask for what we need today. In Exodus, we read the story of how God provided manna daily to His people. Yesterday’s manna was not good. Hoarding for tomorrow is useless. Our request for “daily bread” has two meanings. Jesus is the living bread. Our request is for daily physical sustenance, but also daily spiritual sustenance.
