Power to Believe
The Holy Spirit convicts us of sin and convinces us of Christ. While the spirit of this age blinds the minds of unbelievers, it is the Holy Spirit who sheds light on the Word of God, enabling us to believe. We still have a choice—either to surrender to the truth or to resist it. Jesus told Peter that he could not have made a profession of faith without the Father revealing it. (Matthew 16:17). Paul said that no one could say, Jesus is Lord, without the Holy Spirit’s help. (1 Corinthians 12:3). This work of the Spirit before we believe is called God’s prevenient grace. God pursues us long before we think of Him. The Spirit also assures us of God’s pardon after we believe.
